1B – ELEMENTARY MODERN TURKISH

Introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Turkish. Emphasis is placed not only on the development of the student’s knowledge of Turkish grammatical structures and vocabulary, but also the appropriate use of the structures and vocabulary. Listening and speaking skills are developed in a lively classroom atmosphere through task-based, information gathering type activities, oral exercises, and individual student reports. Reading and writing skills are developed from the very beg inning through varied, authentic texts, written exercises and compositions. In the second part of the course, (T-1B) only Turkish is spoken in class. The class meets five hours a week. In addition, one hour a week listening to audio and videocassettes.

 

100B – INTERMEDIATE MODERN TURKISH

Students continue to build on the foundation established at the first year level in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The medium of instruction is Turkish. The grammatical structures are refined as the students’ read a variety of Turkish h texts, listen to audio and videocassettes and continue writing compositions. The students are linked to various Turkish sites such as Turkish dictionaries, universities, newspapers, and other sites via Berkeley Turkish Web pages. They are also linked to the e-mail addresses of the instructor, their classmates, and members of the Turkish community, with whom they are encouraged to communicate. The class meets five hours a week. In addition, one hour a week listening to audio and videocassettes.

101A – READINGS IN MODERN TURKISH

The medium of instruction is Turkish. As students read a wide variety of texts covering all genres of written texts including literary and political newspaper articles, literary work including poems and short stories, and discuss these texts in class, they continue to refine their knowledge of the grammar, build their vocabulary, and better their listening and speaking skills. The class meets three hours a week and can be repeated for credit.
